Walk 206: Wednesday 27 July

Today: All seems drier again. Sun is strong, deep shadows. Tree’s being cut in Mount Pleasant, the cut branches sit in the road and I enjoy the light coming through the doomed foliage. Starting to enjoy the weird run of pollarded trees in Plantsman close, today I notice their lovely bark patterns.

A light Wednesday delivery. Sad to learn a favourite customer had died over the weekend. Don sat regularly outside his flat in The Cedars, throughout all seasons in his t shirt, and would greet me with a friendly comment and smile. I will miss him.

Walk 206: Tuesday 26 July

Today: Sunny but cooler. A heavy Tuesday delivery, we overrun by 30mins. Spot my first ripe blackberry of the season, A damaged tree and a pair of these wonderfully sculptural flowers. Tired.

Walk 206: Tuesday 19th July

Today: Three trees, Plantsman’s close: Verge, Lime tree road: Favourite lime green tree, that is not a lime tree, in lime tree road.

Dancing sunlight through trees on verge.

Day started hotter than yesterday. Out early to beat the heat but still fairly punishing walking and delivering. A lovely, thoughtful customer at the cedars gave me a can of cold drink. All is dry, today I really could feel how it could get hot and dry enough for fires to spontaneously start and take hold.

Forecast cooler at peak if day tomorrow, but going to be starting off at a higher temperature again.

Walk 206: Monday 18th July

Today: Toasted leaves, Newmarket road: Van adornment.

We start out extra early to try to deliver before the record temperatures start. All is dry, a leaf I step on in Newmarket Road crumbles to dust. Streets are quiet as we keep to the shadows. Sweat drips off my nose as I type this, back home, now, in the full 36 degrees of the day.

Tomorrow starts off hotter…

Walk 206: Friday 15th July

Today: Green leaf filtered light spots on letterbox, Newmarket Road: Red van reflected light on tree and wall, Newmarket Road: Rear car light shadow, Ipswich Grove: Fern spores, Church Avenue.

Light so intense that I catch reflected light moments in the mid morning light. Notice the ferns in Church Avenue looking brown, worry they are drying out, but as I get closer I see their backs are covered with these brown dots. At first I wonder about them being insect eggs, but they are too regular and at home I look up and learn that they are fern spores. I have never noticed them before.

Another hot day delivering, but temperatures set to go up again with highs of 34 degrees Celsius forecast for Monday.

Walk 206: Thursday 14th July

Today, pavements: Delivery Office: Church Avenue East: Lime tree road: Ipswich Road: Ipswich Grove.

Another day brings a welcome fresher breeze. A fair number of parcels, but not too many special deliveries. Everywhere dry. Shadows navy firm. Pavements and the shadows and detritus that decorate them catch my eye. Streets are eerily quiet, schools have broken.

Walk 206: Wednesday 13th July

Today: A rush of hanging basket colour at The Cedars: Dandelions are the only splash of green in the verges on Ipswich Road: Red: These striking flowers catch my eye at 10 Harford Manor Road.

Delivery office has heated up through the last few sunny days. Complete the sorting at 8am and already sweating. Despite the slightly lower temperatures the sun is out today and my salty sweat stings my eyes throughout the morning. My eyes are drawn to all the highly watered lush flowers, perhaps to trick myself into feeling cooler. All crunchy and hard underfoot.

Walk 206: Monday 11 July

Today: 33 Mount Pleasant: 2 Grove walk: Entrance door Arundel Court.

A busy and hot Monday delivering, sunhat on from the beginning. Towards the end of the walk I am noticing doorways, perhaps a desire to be able to escape into them to escape the sun.
